As soon as you make them, they change. For the last few months, I’ve been planning on starting an MA in Communication at Johns Hopkins in Haiti via online classes for the summer, then moving to DC to finish out the one-year program in person. Then David’s organization offered to sweeten his situation to keep him on another year, and before you know it, Haiti started to look like a good option for both of us. I’m now planning to do my grad degree online and hopefully get some professional experience in the field of communication for development. Meanwhile, I won’t be paying the exorbitant rent and beers of Washington, DC.
Going to Haiti, which is significantly poorer than the DR, and learning a new language and culture again no doubt intimidate me. I’ll have the good fortune of benefiting from what David has already learned (his new part time job will be kreyol tutor). But more than anything the con of the new plan to me is continuing to be overseas and far from family and friends. Hopefully with the money I’ll save I can afford some long luxurious trips to the US. New York City and DC are top on my list to visit friends and hopefully do some “networking.”
Wish me luck!

Hey steph, mom just told us this week you’d be staying over there another year. Sounds like a great opportunity but with some definite challenges. I won’t get to see you as much, but maybe I can travel down again sometime this year and get another great country tour. Good luck with the program and see you soon!
Love,
Mike
