On Wednesday, the group of youth I taught through the Escojo Mi Vida reproductive health program did their weekly radio show on HIV/AIDS. They invited a woman living with HIV they knew in the community who is much more open about her situation than most, who experience deep shame over being infected with the virus. She spoke about the discrimination she has faced in employment, with other kids making fun of her kids, and people rejecting her. She also spoke about the HIV support group she participates in in a nearby town with a Peace Corps volunteer there. We are trying to form a group here in El Limón, because as she says, too many people are dying from the disease rather than facing up to the fact that they have it and looking for treatment, which is free and easy to access. This was, in my opinion, the most important accomplishment of this youth group to date. And even better, they organized and executed it all on their own.
Great moments in El Limón radio
