OK OK OK OK OK OK.
As my DJ friend Chupy would say on the community radio station when he’s going for an extra creative transition between songs. I have officially started ”La Hora Americana” on our radio station at the community computer center. A little bit of English lessons, a little bit of American music (Michael Jackson every time, they can’t get enough), and an educational talk of some sort. Every Tuesday at 4.30 p.m.
Lots of fun to impose my music on them for once. Although I really can’t complain. I love bachata as much as the next Dominican.
I started the program last week with a talk about the history of Samana, the peninsula where I live. After Haiti gained its independence, it took over the DR side of the island, freed the slaves, and invited freed slaves from the United States to settle here (This was pre civil war, of course). The only remnants of these settlers in the DR is in Samana, where some of the viejos still speak a little English, and where lots of people have last names like Johnson, Jones, King, and Green. This week, my friend Brittany was visiting my site so I interviewed her about her work in Dajabon, close to the border with Haiti, including a tooth-brushing campaign and reading club she’s been doing. Music selections the first week included Jimi Hendrix, the Talking Heads, and Bruce Springsteen’s ”Born in the USA.” This week I picked a blues/country theme because it has been raining non stop from a tropical wave that is washing the island. I played Eric Clapton, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and John Prine. I explained that blues is so called because the color connotes sadness, which is the sentiment of choice for people living a hard-knock life in the south. I of course also played Michael Jackson.
Without further ado, here are some videos Brittany and I made during our 60 minutes of fame this week. Hope you speak some Spanish or at least enjoy watching me try to!
